The Fascinating History of Ugly Naked People #LGBT #QueerLit

Have you heard the term "new old stock"?

I heard it for the first time on one of those Storage Wars type shows. It refers to products that were manufactured ages ago, but the packaging has never been opened. Like if you bought a case of Ivory soap in 1947, never opened it, then decided to resell it today. That would be new old stock.

Nearly a decade ago, I wrote a story called Ugly Naked People. It's lesbian fiction about anorexia, art, and denial. It was published by Untreed Reads, and so were a few of my other literary shorts. Eventually all those stories were combined into a little anthology called... you guessed it... Ugly Naked People.

That collection has been off the market for a couple years now. I kept meaning to take a look at it, see about reissuing the book, but it ended up on the back burner while I worked on new fiction.

I moved Ugly Naked People to the front burner recently, and when I did I realized 4 of the 5 stories in the original collection were queer fiction. So I thought, hey, when I re-release this book, why not make it queer fiction exclusively?

To that end, I took out the one straight story that was part of the original book, and added in 4 more stories. A few of those are what I consider new old stock.  They're stories I wrote years ago--potentially a decade ago, some of them--but they've never seen the light of day.  They've just been sitting on my old computer, waiting for me to find a use for them.

Well, they've found their purpose in life.  They were meant to be included in Ugly Naked People. And now they are! Eight stories in total, all queer fiction all the time.

Ugly Naked People
Queer Canadian Short Fiction by Giselle Renarde
In this eagerly-anticipated second edition of Ugly Naked People, Giselle Renarde brings readers eight works of queer fiction as engaging as they are diverse. One minute you’re fainting on a Toronto subway, the next you’re fleeing mythological monsters in the Yukon. First a sidewalk psychic’s convincing you new love is right around the corner, and then your family’s reuniting you with an old flame. With Giselle at the wheel, you never quite know what’s around the bend, but you can be sure to enjoy the ride.
