I buy a lot of coins as gifts for one of my sisters (she loves money), so I'm on the Royal Canadian Mint's mailing list. Here's what they sent me today:
See that gold Delta Shield insignia? It costs $1,299.95 and it's SOLD OUT. The other one is 93% sold.
But don't worry. There are these ones too:
I'm a terrible gift-giver, especially when it comes to my girlfriend, but you know what? Someone who owns not one but THREE Star Trek collectors' plates will flip for these Star Trek coins.
And here's the thing: even if she doesn't, guess what? Coins are money!
That's why I generally opt for the Mint's $20 for $20 deals like this one!
I sound like I'm selling these things, right? Haha. I'm just really excited about finding the perfect gift. FINALLY.
Plus, I mean, a $20 coin for 20 bucks. You can't lose.

We Can Work It Out
Last week at Oh Get A Grip! I came clean about some of the relationship messiness that's been going on between Sweet and I. Read it here if you want the backstory: http://ohgetagrip.blogspot.ca/2013/05/its-loooooooong-story.html
Is it weird that I share more of my life with my online community (that's YOU, by the way) than with my "real life" friends? Or is that the new normal?
Anyhoo, just thought I'd give you all an update. After not talking for...wow, almost a month(?!), our anniversary struck. May Day is the anniversary of our first date. As of May 1, 2013, Sweet and I have been together five years. Whether that's a long time or the blink of an eye is relative, I suppose, to the reader's experience. For me, I feel like Sweet and I just met, and I feel like I've known her forever.
So, despite the fact that we'd been out of contact, out of sorts and maybe a little bit out to lunch, I expected Sweet to surprise me. I don't know why. I guess because she's a romantic--much more so than I am. I thought she'd do something nice to commemorate the occasion.
When I didn't hear from her by late afternoon, I started calling all her numbers. I realized that, not knowing how long her evil vacation was supposed to last, I had no idea where in the world she was. Well, somewhere in Canada. But Canada's a damn big country.
I was angry all over again. And then I forced myself out of the house for the volunteer work I'd already committed to. There's something about talking with women escaping domestic violence that always helps put my personal shit in perspective. When I got home, I wrote Sweet this letter:
Who knew I could be so reasonable, huh?
Sweet and I never forget that we love each other, but sometimes our communications get cluttered and we have misunderstandings. It sucks and it hurts, but ultimately we need each other. We're better together.
In order to proceed without being a total jerk, I had to drop my fear of change. I had to be open to the possibility that I might lose everything, or I might not, but neither of those options could destroy me.
We finally FINALLY sat down together yesterday to talk out a lot of stuff that needed talking out. I was sure Sweet would break up with me. She was sure we'd just yell at each other. But we didn't yell. And we didn't break up. We talked and we listened and we really heard each other. I saw Sweet cry for the first time in our five-year history.
The talking and listening and hearing were easier than usual, for me, because I wasn't holding on too tightly. I wasn't focused on WHAT I WANT. Instead, we both considered what's best for us.
When Sweet said, "I don't want to break up with you," I felt a weight lift from my shoulders. I was really angry with her, and I've still got a bit of that residual anger, but I didn't want to destroy something we've spent five years building because I was mad.
Our lives are complicated. We're bound to piss each other off sometimes, and argue, and cry, but as long as those arguments are productive and transformative, I'm on board.
Hugs,
Giselle
Oh, and here's a May-themed madrigal just for the hell of it:

I wanted to acknowledge our anniversary. I didn't want you thinking I'd forgotten. I haven't forgotten it, and I haven't forgotten you.
I'm not sure where we stand, which is why I didn't know the best way to acknowledge this day. I didn't know if I should be celebrating or mourning.
Then I realized I should feel grateful. Because no matter what happens, I've been lucky enough to spend five years with the most beautiful woman I will ever meet. I have learned so much from you. Most importantly, I've learned to value myself.
I five years, you've had a more positive impact on me than anyone else in my life. No matter how our relationship proceeds--as a romance, as a friendship, or as a memory--I will always love you. You mean the world to me. I want you in my life forever. Hopefully that can happen in some way. I trust you enough that I feel confident leaving those decisions in your hands.
I love you with all my heart.
Happy Anniversary.

What I've Discovered About Planning Dates
My most recent discovery is that it's tricky to get the word out about a fundraiser benefitting LGBT youth when your primary promotional vehicle (namely Yahoo Groups) is acting screwy all week.
Here's a super-random (lame) reference: Anyone remember that episode of the Beetlejuice cartoon series where Lydia's trying to teach Beetlejuice the whole "do unto others" idea, so he fills her room with beetles (I think?) because that's what HE would want someone to do for him? And, of course, Lydia freaks out because her room is full of beetles, but he doesn't understand why she's upset?
When Sweet got to my place today, I had all these windows open on my computer: we could go to Buddies in Bad Times (there's a strip spelling bee after hours!), we could check out a film down the street or a québecoise play at the Tarragon, or hot docs, or there's a gay Tennessee Williams play on Bloor West... there's so much to do in Toronto!
But that's not what this blog post is about--I just wanted to get a blatant plug in for my whole "$1 from Nanny State and Secret Confessions going to LGBT Youthline between May 1st and 7th" thing before I really got going. (Click here for details!)
Moving on...
Tuesday was my four year anniversary with my girl Sweet. My girl was working all day and I always do volunteer work Tuesday evenings, so we delayed gratification celebration until today. (Yeah, that "gratification" needed to be crossed out, because we actually got gratified twice this week when we only had a little bit of time together. But I digress...)
In our relationship, it's my job to make plans.
Okay, I HATE making plans.
I get so stressed, but I've embraced both the "planner" role and the "payer" role in our relationship for complex reasons. I have this mindset of "only the best for my girl," but there are times when, realistically, I can't afford the best. Or maybe "the best" doesn't suit Sweet's taste. We're both big theatre goers, but I love opera and she... uhh... doesn't. I'm a symphony-aholic and she... uhh... isn't.

| Beetlejuice was a seriously stupid cartoon. Why am I citing it? |
Yes, you ALL know exactly what I'm talking about. You ALL dressed up as Lydia for Halloween two years in a row. Right? Or was that just me?
Anyway, my point is (yeah, get to the point Giselle) that what I want to give my partner isn't necessarily what she wants to receive. Or maybe she would on a different day, in a different mood.

| Beetlejuice the movie, on the other hand, kicked sandworm ass. Is there anybody out there who DOESN'T want to make sweet love to Winona Ryder? |
But Sweet sat down on my couch and "rested her eyes" because she'd had a tiring day. I sat beside her head on the back of my couch and watched the pigeon mama and her two little chicks in their makeshift nest on my balcony. I gave her a whole laundry list of options for the evening, but she kindly said no to everything.
And for the first time since I started my "planning" frenzy, I actually relaxed.
We ended up taking a long stroll and then walked up my street until we arrived at a restaurant we'd been to before. We both have this weird "new is scary" quirk when it comes to restaurants, so sitting down at a familiar table and a known menu was just heaven. Nothing we did was planned, nothing was pricey, and it was perfect.
So what have I discovered about planning dates?
When it feels like you're pushing it or making things way too complicated or spending too much money, you probably are. Dates should be fun, and stress isn't fun. Be fluid. Things may not work out as planned, but never let the plan overshadow the person you're spending time with. More than that, there are wonders in your own backyard.

Rainbow Socks are the Best Thing about this Video
Remember high school or university (or maybe even elementary school, if you were a procrastinator back then) when you'd pull an all-nighter working on some stupid project you knew you were going to fail anyway?
No? Maybe that was just me.
Anyway, I was reminded of those long-ago days last night when I stayed up until 5 in the morning to make this video promoting Sweet's and my current fundraising effort. I think of book trailers and the like as an automatic fail, because nobody really watches them.
So why make this little video? I don't know. I guess I just want to do everything in my power to promote our effort to raise money for LGBT Youthline.
Maybe you'll watch? It's kind of fun:

In the Month of Meh
Today is April 30th and here in Canada that means taxes are due... like... now. I spent most of yesterday working on mine, all the while feeling like Homer Simpson in that episode where he gets audited. Remember that one? No?
I can't believe I managed to find it online, but here's what I'm talking about (N.B. I used to be like Ned Flanders): http://vimeo.com/34934693
Taxes aside, I'm ready for the coming of May.
For me, April's been the month of "meh"--especially when it comes to reviews. In my years of writing, I've had my share of 1-star reader reviews, and I've had my share of 5-star reviews, but this April has been the month of three. Or, on a scale of poor, fair, ok, good, excellent my work has garnered an "ok." Meh. Everywhere I look, I see "meh."
Even books like "Friends of Dorothy" (my cross-dressing cowboy MMF menage) which has garnered nothing but 5 stars in the year or two it's been on the market seems to have been slapped with a three. More "meh." Not that readers can't rate my books however they please, it just seems like a trend this month.
Maybe I should just shut my gob and count my blessings--my threes could be ones. My mehs could be baaaaads. (Although, when it comes to other authors' books, I find I only read 1-star reviews. Does anybody else do that? I never read the 5-stars. Am I the only one?)
Work aside, May Day happens to be the four-year anniversary of my first date with my Sweet. Stay tuned, because tomorrow I'll let you know how we're planning to celebrate--and it involves YOU. In fact, we can't do it without you.
So be here tomorrow, same bat wings, same leopard leggings... or... how does that go? *smirk*
Hugs,
Giselle

Gifts for Twits
Need a gift for that special Twit in your life? Well, step right up ladies and germs, and pick up a pair of the hottest gloves known to Twitterdom! That's right, they're...

twittens!
(Ahem...yes, but they're gloves, not mittens...sorry, what were you saying?)
twittens are truly the gloves of the text generation: easily access your thumb and/or forefinger to allow for easy texting, photography and endless other things - even in the coldest weather.
Well, there you have it! Perfect for eating donuts, too. They're the gift that'll make your Christmas grand, and you can buy them...uh...hmm...well, actually the online store isn't set up yet and the only retail locations are in Belleville and London, Ontario, so...
Sorry, forget I said anything. You can't have them. You didn't really want them anyway, did you?
Oh, a wise guy, eh? nyuk, nyuk, nyuk.

An Erotic Spin on Anniversary Gifts: The Paper Year
I've been inspired.
Those who follow me on Twitter already know May 1st was the second anniversary of my first date with Sweet. (And those who don't follow me...why don't you follow me?) It was a total gift fail on both our parts. She bought me chocolates, but then I guess I did something to piss her off, so she ate them all herself. LOL. So I went out and bought her a cinnamon bun, and I ate that myself as payback.
Yeah, we are sooooooooo mature! hahaha...
Anyway, having anniversaries on my mind got me thinking about traditional anniversary gifts by year. Yeah, sure, those gifts were traditionally intended for wedding anniversaries, but why not celebrate a first date, first kiss, first fuck, or anything else momentous? Sweet and I celebrate our first date as our annual anniversary, and that's fine by us. We don't need to be married to celebrate our life together.
And thus begins a new feature here at Donuts and Desires: an erotic spin on traditional anniversary gifts! For those who haven't heard, there are traditional gifts for every anniversary.
The Paper Year
The traditional gift for a first anniversary is paper.
How can we spin this into an erotic gift? There are oh-so-many ways!
Love Letters
What a great place to start! Pick up some gorgeous stationary and get that pen in gear. If you read my work, your head is likely full of naughtiness to begin with. Let it all out!
To commemorate the occasion of our first night together, Sweet and I wrote each other poetry. If you're really ambitious, try that!
Erotic Books
Well, of course I'm going to recommend buying a book on your paper anniversary! What kind of an author would I be if I didn't? There are so many theme anthologies out there. If you browse together, it gives you a chance to discuss fantasies and turn-ons as a couple.
Of course, I'm going to get in a plug for my bisexual novella Ondine
Those are my ideas for the paper anniversary. What are yours? Have you received any great paper gifts over the years? Do tell! We welcome new ideas! And be sure to come back next week for an erotic twist on the traditional second anniversary gift: cotton!
Hugs,
Giselle Renarde
