There's been a death in my family. I've blogged about it extensively on another site, but I don't think I've mentioned it here.

My late cousin's parents and sister continue to grieve deeply their son and brother.  My uncle is especially mired in grief and the many emotions that accompany the loss of a child.  I think about my uncle every day.  I want to do something, reach out, provide support, but he doesn't feel like talking to anyone.

I'm sure this is something you've experienced, in some way: you want to help, but you don't know how, or you don't have the resources, or for whatever reason you just can't. You want to be there. You want to improve their life. And when you can't, you just feel... like a failure.

For weeks I've been wondering what I can do.  There are no easy answers.

And then it occurred to me: I can help with your help.

There's a non-profit organization in my city that provides grief counseling and support groups for people experiencing deep loss--like the death of a child.

I've decided to donate all my royalties from October sales of one of my books to this family bereavement organization. When you don't know what to do, you still have to do something. So this is what I'm doing.

Classic Giselle: #Queer and Quirky #Erotica

For the past year or so, I've had this idea bouncing around my brain: an anthology of "Classic Giselle" erotica--stories I wrote at the very start of my career.

When I first started writing, there was only one person who believed in me: my grandma, of all people.  I love grandmas who are cool with sex stuff. I love that I've got one. I knew that, when I released my Classic Giselle anthology, it should somehow honour my grandma.

If you follow me on twitter, you probably know by now that my grandmother's been in hospital for nearly a month.

When she was admitted, she was delirious. She's got a number of infections and she's not doing great.

I don't know how things'll turn out in the end, but I decided now is the right time to honour my grandma with an anthology of classic erotica. It's actually a lot of fun. My grandma's pretty hilarious. She wouldn't want a book made in her honour to be all depressing.

So I've put together a collection of ten stories I wrote way back when, and that collection is called Classic Giselle: Queer and Quirky Erotica.

Thing is, I've also been reflecting on how much I appreciate my readers.  With Valentine's Day coming up, I figured this book would make a nice thank you gift.  So, from now until February 14 2018, the ebook is absolutely free at stores like Kobo, iTunes, Smashwords, BN and eXcitica.

After Valentine's Day, Classic Giselle will cost money. But, again in honour of my grandmother, I'll be donating all the royalties I earn from Classic Giselle throughout 2018 to the Canadian National Institute for the Blind (CNIB).

When my grandma's vision began to decrease due to macular degeneration, the CNIB was there for her every step of the way. And when I say they were there, I mean RIGHT THERE. In her house. People came in to teach her how to adapt to her changing vision.

My grandmother is now legally blind. She's always been a gadget geek, and the CNIB introduced her to accessibility technologies that have proven invaluable in navigating the world. And even tricks like how to pour yourself a glass of water when you can't see the water. Or the glass. They've done so much for her, and this is my way of acknowledging their help and care.

Classic Giselle is a double-whammy thank you. No, I'm wrong. It's a triple threat thank you. It's a thank you to readers for actually, you know, reading my words. It's a thank you to my grandma for believing in me. And it's a thank you to the CNIB for helping my grandma over the years.

Thank You for Giving

I thought I was referencing a movie title in my subject line. Turns out my memory is terrible and the movie I'm actually thinking of is called Please Give. Kind of at the opposite end of the scale, although maybe Please Give would be a better blog title. Or maybe Thank You for Giving and Please Give More would be appropriate.

Year-end means donation time for a lot of people, myself included.  I just finished my quarterly accounting for the charitable anthologies I've produced and set that money free. Fly, little monies! Fly away home!

But, honestly, I couldn't do it without you. If I'd put out LGBT LOVE and nobody had purchased a copy, I wouldn't have been able donate 100% of my royalties to helplines that serve queer people, young and old. If nobody bought Don't You Savage Me, I wouldn't be able to donate 100% of those royalties to organizations that serve Indigenous women in Canada.

At the moment, I'm listening to a radio interview with an amazing 15-year-old pianist named Jonah Davids. Actually, I lie. At the moment, I'm listening to his rendition of Sting's Roxanne. And it's awesome

But the reason I rushed right over to my blog to tell you all about it is that Jonah has been diagnosed with clinical depression. That hits home with me, as you probably know.  As a result, he's been working with a charity called the jack project:

Their reflections stared back at them in the floor-to-ceiling mirrors on three of the four walls in this spic and span elevator.  Tariq rested his chin on top of Marisa’s head, watching her sparkle. When the Day Starts Off Shitty...

You know those days when you roll out of bed in a dizzy haze and you think, "I didn't clean out the litter box yesterday."  And you feel like your cats are going to think you're a total jerk (though, hell, they probably already do--they're cats, after all) so you go straight to the box and start scooping. 

Now that you're holding a little bag of congealed cat waste, you remember that you washed out all your garbage cans last night and they're drying on your balcony and you're not going out there in your skimpy pyjamas because your neighbour often drinks his morning coffee on his balcony.


Right, so you put the little bag down on the bathroom tile just as StupidCat (everyone with multiple cats has one of these, I think) comes to check out the freshly cleaned litter.  You go to the bedroom to put on some real clothes, listening to StupidCat raking around in the litter with those nails you really must cut more often but you don't because he bites you when you try.


You've thrown on clothes, you're heading to the balcony, when StupidCat gets wind of where you're going.  Because, you see, there are baby pigeons on the balcony and he's desperate to get at them.  So you're walking through your living room, your cat streaks through your legs, tripping you up enough to feel badly for accidentally kicking him in the head, though not enough to actually fall.


When he races ahead of you, that's when you notice it: StupidCat didn't finish up in the litter box before getting distracted by the prospect of pigeon babies for breakfast.  He doesn't seem to realize it, but he's trailing poops and they've landed on your carpet and... oh, for the love of god... good thing you put on a pair of socks.

Some people hate cat stories, some people hate scat stories.  This one has it all.

The Cheapest and Easiest Way to "Stamp Out Poverty"

If I'd been thinking, I would have posted info about this program in December, when everyone was getting cards in the post. Oh well, better late than never.

Most people I talk to have never heard of Oxfam's "Stamp out Poverty" program (actually, most people in Canada have never heard of Oxfam), but I think it's brilliant. The program collects postage stamps from volunteers across Canada to sell them to collectors and raise money for Oxfam projects.

I've participated for years, and it's as easy as cutting the cancelled stamps off envelopes I receive in the mail. Really! I just save them up until I have a whole bunch, then send them in. It's unbelievably easy.

The stamp program needs volunteers to collect stamps, or even donate valuable stamp collections, which they sell to philatelists (stamp collectors--there's a word of the day for 'ya LOL). Here's some info I pulled from Oxfam Canada's website:

How the money is raised

Those used stamps and envelopes can add up. Oxfam Canada volunteers raise about $10,000 annually by sorting and selling stamps to collectors. Nearly $250,000 has been given to Oxfam from the Stamp Program since it started in 1980.

What you should save

• Everything!
  • foreign stamps
  • Canadian stamps
  • commemorative stamps
    
• Keep the entire envelope if there are:
  • clearly identifiable town/village postmarks
  • registered/special delivery postmarks
