Family, Grief, and How You Can Help #SeniorSex #Erotica

There's been a death in my family. I've blogged about it extensively on another site, but I don't think I've mentioned it here.

My late cousin's parents and sister continue to grieve deeply their son and brother.  My uncle is especially mired in grief and the many emotions that accompany the loss of a child.  I think about my uncle every day.  I want to do something, reach out, provide support, but he doesn't feel like talking to anyone.

I'm sure this is something you've experienced, in some way: you want to help, but you don't know how, or you don't have the resources, or for whatever reason you just can't. You want to be there. You want to improve their life. And when you can't, you just feel... like a failure.

For weeks I've been wondering what I can do.  There are no easy answers.

And then it occurred to me: I can help with your help.

There's a non-profit organization in my city that provides grief counseling and support groups for people experiencing deep loss--like the death of a child.

I've decided to donate all my royalties from October sales of one of my books to this family bereavement organization. When you don't know what to do, you still have to do something. So this is what I'm doing.

I'm sure I'm not the only person on the planet who needs to look forward to something. And when September rolls around, signalling the end of summer, this can be a tough time for many of us.

That's why I've planned something special for September. A little extravaganza for you and me.

I guess a new book should be exciting in and of itself... but after 12 years as a writer... it's not. I mean, it's great and all, but not jump-for-joy great.

Here's how it's going to work: on the 1st of the month, the 1st story goes up. I post it (I'm thinking I'll do that each day at midnight), you read it. But wait! In fact, why don't I tell you the story of Erotica Every Day? You like stories, right?

Well, I do, so I'm telling it.

Over the past couple years, a lot of the publishers I worked with early in my career went out of business. As a result, I got my rights back on a lot of books. The influx of old works meant I was spending all my time republishing old stuff, and zero time writing new stuff. Months and months and months went by when I wasn't writing at all.

One day I looked at my computer, and I asked it, "Do I even know how to write anymore?"

It didn't answer, because I don't have one of those fancy computers that talks to you. So I had to answer my own question. And the answer was, "I don't know."

But I had an idea.

I decided to start every day by writing one flash fiction story. Well, that's a bit of a lie because I actually start every day drinking a cup of tea (I quit coffee a year and a half ago--did I mention that?) and reading.

Often, whatever I was reading that morning would give me a little flicker of inspiration, and I'd go off and flash away. Other days, I'd seek out inspiration from a list of fetishes Sweet and I came up with. That's why this is such a fetish-driven collection. Or, what do they say on those cooking shows? "Fetish-forward." And now you're wondering what kind of cooking shows I watch. heh.

The audiobook came about in a strangely similar way. Actually, the similarities are eerie.

This summer I was working on recording a novel of mine when I came down with a case of strep. I took my strep on my family vacation, and when I came home it was cured (thanks to antibiotics, not my family) but my voice was fucked. I couldn't record more than 5 minutes of audio at a time. My voice would crack, break, my throat would start to burn, I'd worry the strep was simply dormant and pushing myself too hard might bring it back.

I was really frustrated. Audio recording is an essential aspect of my writing business at the moment. It worried me that I couldn't work.

And then I thought about this book of flash fiction.

A lot of these stories clock in around the 5 minute mark. They were the perfect length to get me back on my feet again. I really don't know what I would have done with out them. I owe my flashers a debt of gratitude.

I also owe my Patreon patrons a debt of gratitude. I owe them weekly audio erotica, too. But in September I'm going one better. Or six better. Or something. A Playlist for Cherry #NewAdult #MayDecember #Erotica

Remember how much I love music?

Last year I put together a playlist on YouTube, of songs that fit the mood of my novel In Shadow.

Today I've done the same for my book Cherry.

While In Shadow was dark and brooding, Cherry is really rather cheery. And so is the music I've selected for this playlist. I've been working on it for over a year, jotting down any song that matched the tone of Cherry: playful, saucy, and teasingly seductive.

It's mostly indie rock with a hint of the 80s. Or maybe it's the other way around. There's a lot of music from the 80s in there. Actually, I'll tell you why, while I have you on the line: a lot of the 70s and 80s music is stuff we listen to at the cottage. We always tune the radio to Moose FM, and that whole station just reminds me of summertime and family vacations. Since Cherry is set in the summertime (and during a family vacation), the radio station and this novel have sort of fused in my mind. You can also blame the Moose for the Bare Naked Ladies song on this playlist. Or thank them, depending on your level of affection for the group.

Me and She and Florence + the Machine

I'm just sitting here listening to the new Florence + the Machine album. I didn't even realize there was a new Florence + the Machine album until I signed in to my hoopla account looking for something else.

They've been playing the single Hunger on the radio, so I knew there was an album on the way. I just didn't realize it was here. I remember they started playing What Kind of Man months before the release of How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful, which is sitting next to me. It's on the coffee table. I'm on the floor. It's a CD. I'm a person.

I didn't come here to talk about Florence, although I certainly could. I could tell you about the time my friend Nafisa booked us tickets for a play, but she got the dates mixed up so we arrived at the theatre with tickets that weren't good until the following week. We ended up grabbing dessert instead and talking to some girl whose name I don't remember. This girl and her girlfriend were obsessed with Florence. They went to every concert they could afford, which isn't saying much, because it takes a lot of money to stalk a band.

(Just ask my old friend from Girl Guides, who attended every Barenaked Ladies concert in Ontario in the mid-90s.)

Anyway, every time Florence + the Machine comes on the radio, that random girl I met with Nafisa comes to mind. I don't know if she and her girlfriend are still together and still obsessed with Florence, but I'd like to think they are. On both accounts.

I could also tell you about driving up to the cottage last week, armed with this copy of How Big, How Blue, How Beautiful that now sits beside me. We've been driving to this cottage for 20 years.  In that time, I've learned that we lose Toronto radio stations somewhere past Whitby. It's easier to listen to CDs than constantly be trawling local stations.

On the way up, we listened to Florence + the Machine as soon as we lost our Toronto radio. My mom had never heard of Florence, but after a song called Third Eye, she said, "You know, I really like this music. It's very uplifting."

From now on, that'll always be my association with Third Eye: it's the song my mother found uplifting.

I could tell you a week's worth of stories from the cottage. This year's stories are more life-altering than usual.  And, in fact, I've already told them.  I told them to my girlfriend, in letter form. And to you, in the form of a book of correspondences--my second book of correspondences from cottage country, in case you're keeping track.
